Why Are Non-woven Bags Banned in India

Jan 22, 2024

As updated in January 2022, India has been actively addressing the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics, including plastic bags. While there was no nationwide ban on non-woven bags at that time, several states and Union Territories in India had implemented restrictions on the use of certain types of plastic bags.

The ban is only for making less than 60 gsm nonwoven bags, for other uses less than 60 gsm nonwoven fabric can be used. Why Banned? It is thinner and thus very hard to collect & recycle. Due to its thickness & Cheapness, it is being used recklessly & making bulk wastage.

Non-woven bags, typically made from polypropylene, are often considered environmentally friendlier than traditional plastic bags due to their potential for reuse. However, their environmental impact still raises concerns, especially if they are not properly managed at the end of their life cycle.

States in India have implemented various measures, such as bans on certain thicknesses of plastic bags, restrictions on manufacturing and distribution, and awareness campaigns to promote the use of alternatives like cloth bags, jute bags, and other biodegradable materials. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to tackle plastic pollution, reduce litter, and create a more sustainable waste management system.
