Where did non woven fabric come from

Nonwoven fabrics have been around for centuries, but the modern production of nonwoven fabrics began in the mid-20th century. The development of nonwoven technology can be traced back to the early 20th century when researchers and manufacturers started experimenting with different methods of creating fabrics without the traditional weaving or knitting processes.

The first patent for a nonwoven fabric was filed in 1924 by Raymond Oliphant of the United States. However, it was not until the 1940s that nonwoven fabrics gained commercial significance. During World War II, there was a need for materials with specific properties, such as filters, surgical dressings, and wipes, which led to increased research and development in nonwoven technology.

The breakthrough for nonwoven fabrics came with the advent of synthetic fibers and the development of new manufacturing techniques. In the 1950s, the introduction of polyester and polypropylene fibers, along with methods like needle punching and spun bonding, revolutionized the production of nonwoven materials. These methods allowed for the creation of fabrics with diverse properties, such as strength, absorbency, and filtration capabilities, without the need for traditional weaving or knitting. The production of nonwoven fabrics typically involves two major processes: web formation and web consolidation. The main web formation methods are carding, air laying, wet laying, spun-bonding, melt-blowing and more recently electro-spinning.

Since then, nonwoven fabrics have found a wide range of applications in various industries, including healthcare, automotive, construction, agriculture, and more. The continuous innovation in materials and manufacturing processes has further expanded the versatility and utility of nonwoven fabrics.
