The Production Process of Non-woven Fabrics
Jun 29, 2023
Non-woven fabric is a type of material that is made without the use of weaving or knitting techniques. Instead, it is created by bonding or interlocking fibers through a variety of methods. Here is a general overview of the process of making non-woven fabric:
1. Fiber preparation: The first step in creating non-woven fabric is to choose the type of fiber that will be used. Common fibers include polyester, nylon, rayon, and polypropylene. These fibers may be in the form of staple fibers (short fibers) or continuous filaments. The fibers are usually cleaned and blended to create a consistent mixture that will be used in the next step.
2. Web formation: In this step, the fibers are formed into a web or mat using one of several methods. One method is dry-laid web formation, which involves carding the fibers to create a thin layer of fibers. Another method is wet-laid web formation, which involves suspending the fibers in water and using a machine to form them into a mat. A third method is spunbonding, which involves extruding the fibers in a molten state and then blowing them onto a moving conveyor belt.
3. Bonding: Once the fiber web is formed, it needs to be bonded together to create a cohesive material. There are several methods of bonding that can be used, including:
- Thermal bonding: This involves passing the fiber web through a set of heated rollers that melt the fibers slightly, causing them to bond together.
- Chemical bonding: This involves applying a liquid adhesive or resin to the fiber web, which then hardens and binds the fibers together.
- Mechanical bonding: This involves using needles to punch the fibers together, creating a felt-like material.
- Hydroentanglement: This involves using high-pressure water jets to entangle the fibers and create a bonded material.
4. Finishing: Once the fabric is bonded, it may go through additional finishing processes to modify its properties. This might include treatments to make it water-resistant, fire-retardant, or anti-static, or adding dyes or prints to create a desired appearance.
5. Cutting and packaging: The finished non-woven fabric is then cut into rolls or sheets and packaged for shipment to customers who will use it to create a variety of products.
